Tax Certiorari

Mackenzie Hughes was lead counsel to the city of Syracuse in litigation involving the tax status of Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport, and in negotiating a payment-in-lieu-of-tax agreement between the city and the host municipality. The firm also won tax-exempt status for a $3.4 million water system improvement in another municipality.

We are one of the leading Central New York law firms in the area of real property valuation and tax assessment review. One of our partners, Carter Strickland, was special counsel to the New York State commission that drafted the current eminent domain law that governs many of these proceedings.

We represent both municipalities and property owners in highly specialized property tax assessment review proceedings. Our clients have included counties, cities, towns, school districts and major regional businesses such as shopping malls, office parks and retail facilities.

We also counsel clients in obtaining real property tax exemptions for charitable, educational, religious, business investment, municipal and environmental reasons.
