Alfred W. Popkess, a partner, joined Mackenzie Hughes in 1969 and is
a member of the Business Department at the firm. His practice concentrates
in commercial lending, commercial real estate transactions, general real
estate and development. His financing and real property experiences range
from the development, finance, leasing and sale of multi-million dollar
office buildings to tax exempt industrial development agency financing,
letter of credit financing, traditional commercial and industrial financing
and affordable housing non-profit development.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 from Ohio Wesleyan University
and a Juris Doctorate from St. John's University School of Law in 1969.
Al was admitted to the New York Bar in 1970, and in 1976 he was admitted
to the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York. While in law
school, he was class president from 1968 to 1969 and was chosen as the
Law School Representative at the National Moot Court Competition in 1969.
Al has been selected by his peers to be included in the Real Estate Law
Section of "The Best Lawyers in America" in 2008 and the previous
eleven years.
Al is a member of the Onondaga County, New York State and American Bar
Associations as well as a former member of the NYSBA Special Committee
on Specialization. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Real
Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association as the representative
of the Fifth Judicial District. He is also a past president of the Onondaga
County Bar Foundation, a past director of the Onondaga County Bar Association
and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Farmers and Traders
Life Insurance Company and Lake Front Development Agency. He also served
as chairman of the several United Way Divisions and the WCNY Tel-AC.
