Mackenzie Hughes Celebrates 125 Years in Business

Attorneys and Staff to Provide 125 Hours of Service to Community Each Month in 2010 To celebrate its 125th anniversary in business, Mackenzie Hughes LLP attorneys and staff will give 125 hours back to the community every month in 2010.

To kick off the celebration, Mackenzie Hughes will be serving food for the less fortunate at the Samaritan Center on Wednesday, February 17 at 3:15-5:00pm. Giving back to the community is an important part of the culture at Mackenzie Hughes with the majority of the firm’s attorneys and many of the staff all contributing to a variety of boards and causes in the community that they truly believe in.

“For 125 years our attorneys and staff have made a commitment to the future and well-being of the Syracuse community,” said Steve Helmer, chair of the executive committee at Mackenzie Hughes. “It’s what we do. We’re proud to call Syracuse home. It is only fitting that we celebrate our anniversary year by doing something we already love to do—giving back.”

Giving back to the community has long been a tradition at Mackenzie Hughes. William A. Mackenzie, one of the namesakes of the firm, served more than a dozen notable local charities in his day, including the Pebble Hill School, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and Syracuse Boys Club.

More recently, Anne B. Ruffer, a partner at the firm, was recognized by the Onondaga County Bar Association in 2005 for her pro bono work with low income and in need local residents.

In 2007, Dennis R. Baldwin, now a retired attorney with the firm, received the prestigious Senior Lawyers Division Pro Bono Award from the American Bar Association.

Ricky Ryder, a network administrator at Mackenzie Hughes, was recently honored with an achievement award from Enable for his service and dedication to their cause. Ryder is just the latest of a long list of current Mackenzie Hughes employees who have been honored by a local nonprofit organization.
